SKETCH ANALYSIS

2 min read

HOW I FELT:

This sketch has some emotion in it! Mostly from Keegan’s character Gary. It’s really fun to watch his frustration grow as the heightening progresses. The ambiance of the family with the replies of “um hm” “okay” made it feel grounded and real.

WHAT WORKS:

I’ve seen this sketch many times but this time I particularly enjoyed the game that Finny's character played by not being able to make eye contact with Keygan’s character. I also loved how uncomfortable Jordan’s character, Larry was. His high pitched voice at the top of the sketch was brilliant! I loved how he stumbled over saying Gary was his friend, and couldn’t even say gay but had to say ‘active in the homosexual community’.

STRUCTURE/ EXPOSITION

Pov: A Gay wedding is basically just like a straight one.

Who: Gary, a gay co-worker of Larry

What: Family meeting to discuss cousin’s wedding

Where: Family living room

Game: Each member has an absurd question about the wedding.

I think the exposition of this sketch is very efficient. Everything is set up about 45 seconds into the sketch.

Premise based improv scene initiation:

“Welcome everyone, I’m here to answer all your strange questions about a gay wedding.”

GAME BEATS:

Because this is a town hall there’s a lot of characters speaking up and adding in their two cents to heighten Keegan’s emotional response. Some of the characters have their own mini-games or obsessions.

Grandpa’s is with singing the ‘gay hymns’ or anthems.

Grandma’s is what things look like.

Finney’s, with the shifty eye contact, keeps asking questions that reveal his concern of being adequate or knowing how to do a task.

The sister, standing in the back row, obsession is with the sexual or physical. They use her to the most effect to heighten the game towards the end.

  1. “Do the men wear dresses and the women wear suits?”

  2. “None of us are gay so do we sit in the straight section?” “We just guess who’s gay.”

  3. “When in the ceremony do we sing over the rainbow?”

  4. “I’m nervous cuz I can only do jazz hands for about three min before my hands start to cramp”

  5. No eye contact

  6. “Can we see the pony show from the strait section or are we in the back somewhere?”

  7. “When do we sing YMCA?”

  8. “What about Macho Macho man?” - Larry

  9. “I don't know where to buy no gay presents”

  10. “Where do you get euros to buy gay gifts”

  11. “Do we have to participate in the anal sex or do we just watch and cheer in a fireman’s hat?”

  12. “When do we get to sing it’s rainin’ men hallelujah it’s rainin’ men?”

  13. “Well does the fake fake priest look like a real priest or a nun?”

  14. “Or is it a sexy boat captain and he takes his clothes off?”

  15. “Do we throw something other than rice?”

  16. “When they kiss, is it okay to stand up and be like eww!”

  17. “Is Ru paul going to be there? Neil Patrick Harris?”

  18. “What if you don’t want your picture on the internet?”

  19. “Is ridiculous a gay term?“

ENDING:

In the end Keegan’s character at the height of escalation and frustration throws his hands and leaves. The straw being the crazy question shifting off topic from the wedding and onto how to not get a picture on the internet.

Then the larger character adding “I think we pretty much got it.” when they all clearly do not.

PITCHES:

Naming the characters would have made it a easier for me to analyze and write about this sketch but I don’t know that it would have added much to the humor.

Outside of a few pitches of adding a question here or there about other wedding related activities or having a few more characters talk this sketch seems pretty well realized to me.

CHARACTERS:

Speaking 7, Total 10
