Party Games - Key & Peele

When two "couples" get together to play a celebrity guessing game a shocking secret is revealed.

SKETCH ANALYSIS

2 min read

TYPE OF SKETCH: Character based, game sketch, accidental reveal of information.

HOW I FELT:

I laughed at how awkward everyone at the party felt and how Jordan’s character keeps rolling so fast with the game at first he doesn’t realise he’s revealing such personal information.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME:

It’s short and sweet! Less is more is on display in this sketch. The exposition is basically just one line describing the game and the visual of a living room with the two ‘couples’. This piece REALLY lends itself to good acting. The script dialog is very simple but lends itself to playing with emotional changes during it. During the part of the sketch where Keegan and Jordan are on a roll Jordan’s character keeps getting handsy with Keegan. He hugs and touches Keegan’s arm before touching his knee as he yells out ME! The looks that the two ladies give each other after the first and second reveal as well as their gasps add to the dramatic tension for me as does the increased volume of the ticking timer.

STRUCTURE/ EXPOSITION

Who: Two couples

What: Playing guess the celebrity

Where: Living room

Game: Guy struggles to realize a celebrity person who’s pretending to be straight isn’t himself.

Premise based improv scene initiation:

I’m going to say secrets about celebrities for this guessing game but remember; don’t accidentally say me again like last time!

GAME BEATS:

  1. He says with confidence ME!

  2. Says with a quivering lip, me?! Possibly in shock but doubling down.

  3. I’m not a latin pop star? Bewildered.

ENDING:

“I wrote that one too!”

Jordan’s character says with regret.

SFX Timer: DING!

Provides a nice finality to the game AND the sketch.

PITCHES:

One of the things I loved about this sketch was that it was so short and well executed. They stuck with the same issue, saying ‘me’ for each beat of the game but they just played around with how he said it. The first time the ladies were like, ‘wait what? Did he just…?’ I loved how the third time he said it he’s so confused.

Themes:

Sexual Orientation, Friends, Social tension, Shock.

# characters: 4

Tone scale: VERY grounded.
